My dream is to one day actually to establish a non-profit. In the meantime, I make regular donations to charities within the New Orleans area. 2006 donations have included Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana and Girls & Boys Town - Behrman Emergency Shelter.
The non-profit would focus attention to children in settings where they are either in single family homes or where their parents may have trouble with substance abuse. The children targeted would be in the 11-17 age category where staying in extended care services are no longer "cool" or offered. This place would feature cultural activities such as: art, dance, performance, etc. The things "middle-class" kids take for granted. They will be offered for free or with a small activity/supply stipend depending on donations at the time. Counseling services would be added for children to voice their problems and concerns and also be offered to parents who want to overcome challenges they may face with alcohol, jobs, parenting, etc.
The community can only grow and become whole if societal issues are faced and addressed. Harm can be done to children in so many ways and facing their home and life problems offers them a chance to learn how to deal with tough situations and BE A KID TOO!
Again, this charity does not exist yet but I hope one day I will be able to start this as an opportunity for young people.
